Burton’s efforts took place in the heightened sectarian atmosphere within the new communist movement in general, and the RU in particular. By the mid-Seventies, the RU was displaying willingness; indeed, an eagerness to launch polemics against any organization it felt was claiming its rightful mantle as the new vanguard. Throughout 1974 Revolution ran extensive polemics against the Guardian newspaper, the October League, the Black Workers Congress, the Puerto Rican Revolutionary Workers Organization, and the Communist League.476 The RU sought to distinguish itself from all others, as the true vanguard that would soon be manifested in a new communist Party. The irony is that they, like those they polemicized against, were in a race to a finish line that would soon vanish—as events in China took their decisive turn.
